This composites fundamentals training course reviews the structure, properties, manufacture, applications, inspection, testing & joining of of composite materials.
The course has been developed by academic & industry experts which ensures that the content is both academically rigorous and practically relevant.
The course is suitable for candidates at all levels, including those new to composite materials, as no specific qualification entry requirements are required.
Candidates also receive a comprehensive, full-colour Training Handbook that serves as both a course guide and a valuable reference tool after completion of the course.
The course is structured as follows:
Introduction
The course opens by defining composite materials and outlining the scope of the course. Composites are presented as engineered combinations of two or more distinct materials designed to achieve superior mechanical, thermal, or chemical performance.
Chapter 1 — Atoms, Compounds & Types of Bonding
This chapter establishes the chemical and atomic foundations needed to understand composite constituents. It covers atomic structure, compounds and the major bonding types—ionic, covalent, and metallic—highlighting how bonding influences material behaviour.
Chapter 2 — Constituent Materials: Metals, Alloys & Ceramics
The chapter reviews the key properties of metals and alloys, including crystalline structure and mechanical behaviour. It then introduces ceramics, covering glasses, refractories and abrasives, emphasising their high‑temperature stability, hardness and brittleness.
Chapter 3 — Constituent Materials: Carbons
A detailed overview of carbon‑based materials used in advanced composites:
Diamond
Graphite
Fullerenes
Graphene
Carbon nanotubes
These materials are highlighted for their exceptional stiffness, thermal conductivity and electrical properties.
Chapter 4 — Constituent Materials: Polymers
This chapter explains polymer chemistry and structure, including semi‑crystalline polymers, monomers and polymerisation, copolymers and molecular shapes.
It distinguishes thermoplastics from thermosets, reviews tensile behaviour and introduces major polymer groups: plastics, elastomers, aramid fibres and adhesives.
Chapter 5 — Composite Materials: Characteristics, Properties, Manufacture, Inspection, Testing & Applications
This comprehensive chapter covers the full landscape of composite materials.
Composites are classified into:
Particle‑reinforced composites (large‑particle systems, cermets, concrete, dispersion‑strengthened alloys such as Thoria‑dispersed nickel)
Fibre‑reinforced composites (GFRP, CFRP, aramid, basalt)
Fibre‑Reinforced Composites. Key concepts include:
Specific strength & modulus
Fibre length (continuous vs discontinuous)
Fibre orientation & anisotropy
Modulus calculations
Matrix Types:
Polymer matrix composites (thermosets, thermoplastics)
Metal matrix composites (MMCs)
Ceramic matrix composites (CMCs)
Structural composites (laminar systems)
Nanocomposites, including nanocarbons
The chapter also covers fabrication and processing methods, mechanical testing, inspection techniques and joining methods for composite structures.
