Comprehensive non‑destructive testing (NDT) training covering magnetic particle testing (MPI), dye penetrant testing (DPI), ultrasonic testing (UT), radiography (RT), eddy current testing (ETT) and practical interpretation of results. Designed for engineers, inspectors and technical managers who need industry‑focused understanding of NDT methods to support manufacturing, fabrication, welding qualification and quality‑related decision‑making.

COURSE OVERVIEW

Book on this course if you want a clear understanding of NDT methods, their capabilities, their limitations and how they support safe, compliant, high‑quality engineering.

The course offers an engineering‑grade introduction to all major NDT methods — designed for supervisors, QA/QC, RWCs, welding coordinators, inspectors, metallurgists, technicians and engineers who need greater understanding.

The course covers the fundamental principles, typical applications, advantages & disadvantages, applicable international standards and the training requirements for Inspectors for the principal types of NDT techniques that are widely specified for the identification of imperfections & defects in metal products including welds & other engineering materials.

The NDT techniques covered include:

• ULTRASONIC TESTING (UT)

• RADIOGRAPHIC TESTING (RT)

• MAGNETIC PARTICLE TESTING (MT)

• DYE PENETRANT TESTING (PT)

• EDDY CURRENT TESTING (ET)

• ACOUSTIC EMISSION (AE) TESTING

The Fundamentals of NDT is a professionally recognised technical qualification. Employers value it because it provides the NDT understanding needed by engineers, manufacturing personnel, metallurgists & quality personnel. Please note, this course does not train you to be a qualified NDT Inspector.

Our courses set the standard for technical training in the metals, welding & materials engineering industries. Since 2013 we have trained more than 700 candidates on Metallurgy, Welding, Materials Engineering & Quality Management courses.

Flexible Self Study Learning

The course is completed by self study, which means candidates can start and progress through the training at anytime, anywhere & at their own pace. No need to wait for course dates for classroom-based or online training courses and no need to pay travelling expenses & to spend time away paying for hotels & other living expenses.

Full-Colour Training Handbook

Candidates also receive a comprehensive, full-colour Training Handbook that serves as both a course guide and a valuable reference tool after completion of the course.

No Prior Knowledge Required

The course is ideal for candidates at all levels including those new to non-destructive testing as no specific qualification entry requirements are required.

Tutor Support

Candidates also have the support of a Course Tutor as they progress through the course.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The course is structured as follows:

Introduction

The course opens by defining the purpose and scope of NDT and why it is essential for ensuring the integrity, safety, and reliability of engineering components. It clarifies the distinctions between defects, imperfections, flaws, discontinuities and indications and introduces terminology used in external standards.

Radiographic Testing (RT)

This explains the principles of X‑rays and gamma rays, their place in the electromagnetic spectrum, and how radiographic images are formed. It covers film radiography, digital and computed radiography and the factors that influence image quality.

Ultrasonic Testing (UT)

A comprehensive review of ultrasonic inspection, covering:

• Sound wave properties

• Probe types (normal, angle, twin‑crystal)

• Longitudinal and shear waves

• Mode conversion, refraction & Snell’s Law

• Pulse‑echo inspection for defect detection and depth measurement

• Thickness measurement techniques

• Dead zone and probe selection

• DAC calibration using flat‑bottomed and side‑drilled holes

• Acceptance levels such as BS EN ISO 11666

• Amplitude, dB calculations, and the 6 dB drop method for sizing indications

• Advanced techniques include Phased Array (PAUT), Time of Flight Diffraction (ToFD), guided wave testing, and automated / immersion systems.

Magnetic Particle Inspection (MT / MPI)

This covers the principles of magnetic flux leakage, surface preparation and the behaviour of ferromagnetic materials. It explains magnetisation methods, interpretation of indications, and demagnetisation. Acceptance criteria reference BS EN ISO 23278.

Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)

PT is explained through the principles of capillary action, penetrant types, developer systems, and inspection sequences. Acceptance levels reference BS EN ISO 23277, applicable to structural steel welds.

Eddy Current Testing (ET)

This introduces electromagnetic induction, probe types, frequency effects, and the detection of surface and near‑surface cracks. Automated ET systems are also discussed.

Acoustic Emission Testing (AE)

AE is presented as a dynamic monitoring technique that detects transient elastic waves generated by crack growth or structural changes. The chapter outlines AE characteristics, sensors and typical applications.

Training Requirements of Inspectors (BS EN ISO 9712 & BS EN 4179)

This final section explains the competency framework for NDT personnel.

BS EN ISO 9712: Levels 1, 2, and 3, plus product‑sector certification

BS EN 4179: Requirements for aerospace NDT personnel

ASSESSMENT & CERTIFICATION

Candidates are assessed on the course by an End of Course Assessment which is e-mailed to the candidate. Completed Assessments are then e-mailed to the Course Tutor for marking. Candidates who achieve the required standard on the Assessment will be awarded a Certificate of Achievement in 'THE FUNDAMENTALS OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING (NDT)' & CPD 12 HOURS.
