This comprehensive course reviews the principles, advantages, disadvantages & applications of fusion & solid state welding processes, welding codes & standards and the fundamental technology of welding & brazing.
The course is suitable for candidates at all levels, including those new to welding & brazing technology, as no specific qualification entry requirements are needed.
The course has been developed by academic & industry experts which ensures that the content is both academically rigorous and practically relevant.
Candidates also receive a comprehensive, full-colour Training Handbook that serves as both a course guide and a valuable reference tool after completion of the course.
The overall structur of the course is as follows:
Session 1 — Foundations of Welding & Parent Metal Standards
The course begins by defining welding, metals, and alloys, and reviewing the essential properties of metals that influence weldability. Fundamental metallurgy and key welding terminology are introduced to build technical understanding.
A major section covers parent metal product standards, including BS EN ISO, ASTM/ASME, and UNS designations, and the importance of specifying correct BS EN 10204 certification levels when purchasing materials.
The session concludes with an overview of major metal product groups: structural steels, low‑alloy steels, reinforcing steels, pipeline steels, pressure‑vessel steels, stainless steels, aluminium alloys, and nickel alloys.
Session 2 — Overview of Welding Processes
This session provides a comprehensive review of welding processes across all major categories:
Fusion Welding – Arc Processes
MMA, TIG, MIG/MAG, SAW, FCAW, MCAW, Plasma Arc Welding
Fusion Welding – Other Processes
Thermit welding, gas welding
Resistance Welding
Spot, projection, resistance butt, flash butt, seam welding
Beam Welding
Electron beam, laser beam, hybrid laser‑arc welding
Solid‑State Welding
Forge, ultrasonic, friction, friction stir, cold, explosive, diffusion welding
The session ends with guidance on choosing the correct welding process for a given application.
Session 3 — Welding Codes, Standards & Joint Types
This session introduces the key welding codes and standards used across industry and explains the types of welded joints and weld forms used in fabrication.
Session 4 — Welding Positions, Symbols & Fatigue
The chapter covers welding positions, the interpretation of welding symbols, and the mechanisms of fatigue failure in welded structures.
Session 5 — Welding Procedures, Qualification & Quality Management; Principles of Brazing
The final session explains the full framework for welding quality control:
Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS)
Welder and welding operator qualification
Welding stresses, distortion & residual stress
Post‑weld heat treatment (PWHT)
Weld repairs
It continues with welding quality management systems, including:
ISO 3834
BS EN ISO 14731 (welding coordination roles & responsibilities)
Non‑conformance reporting & corrective actions
It concludes with the principles, advantages, disadvantages and applicable standards of brazing as an alternative metal joining method
