This Metallurgy of Stainless Steel training course provides candidates with comprehensive knowledge, skills & understanding on the structure, properties, manufacture, applications, inspection & testing of stainless steel.
The course is suitable for candidates at all levels, including those new to the Metallurgy of stainless steel, as no specific qualification entry requirements are required.
The course has been developed by academic & industry experts which ensures that the content is both academically rigorous and practically relevant.
You don’t need a university degree to build a successful career in Metallurgy. You need practical, industry-led training — and that’s exactly what we deliver.
Candidates also receive a comprehensive, full-colour Training Handbook that serves as both a course guide and a valuable reference tool after completion of the course.
The course is structured as follows:
Chapter 1 — Physical Metallurgy & Crystalline Structure of Metals & Alloys
This chapter establishes the scientific foundations needed to understand stainless steel behaviour. It covers the definitions of metals, alloys, and metallurgy, followed by atomic structure, metallic bonding, crystal systems, and allotropic behaviour. The relationship between grain size and mechanical properties, creep mechanisms, and grain boundary sliding is explained, along with ASTM E112 grain‑size specification.
Deformation mechanisms—slip, dislocations, slip systems, Miller indices—are introduced, followed by strengthening mechanisms such as work hardening, cold working, annealing, grain growth and the formation of annealing twins and stacking faults in FCC metals.
The chapter concludes with alloying effects, phases, phase diagrams, non‑equilibrium martensite, and microstructural examination using metallography and electron microscopy.
Chapter 2 — Mechanical Properties & Their Measurement
This chapter explains how stainless steel mechanical behaviour is quantified. It covers:
Tensile testing
Charpy V‑notch impact testing
Proof testing
Hardness testing
Creep and stress‑rupture testing
Certification requirements to BS EN 10204 are included to support traceability and quality assurance.
Chapter 3 — Inspection of Metals: Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) Techniques
A practical overview of the main NDT methods used to detect surface and internal defects in stainless steel products:
Radiographic Testing (RT)
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI/MT)
Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
Eddy Current Testing (ET)
Chapter 4 — Metallurgy of Stainless Steel
This chapter explains the characteristics of stainless steel, the fundamentals of corrosion and how alloying and heat treatment influence microstructure. All major stainless steel families are covered:
Austenitic
Ferritic
Martensitic
Precipitation‑hardening
Duplex
Microstructure prediction and phase balance are emphasised to support correct grade selection and fabrication.
Chapter 5 — How Stainless Steel Is Made
A full overview of stainless steel production routes, beginning with Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) melting, followed by refining through AOD and VOD processes. Secondary steelmaking operations—temperature control, alloying, inclusion removal—are explained, along with high‑integrity melting routes such as Vacuum Induction Melting (VIM).
Casting processes include continuous casting, ingot casting, and high‑integrity remelting. Solidification behaviour, microsegregation, macrosegregation, grain shape, and the importance of superheat are covered.
Downstream processes include hot rolling, hot forging, cold working, and casting routes such as sand casting and investment casting.
Modern manufacturing technologies—machining, powder metallurgy, additive manufacturing—are included, along with methods for surface hardening of stainless steel.
