A professional certificate that proves real industry competence and which is affordable, accessible, flexible & timely.
This unrivalled Metallurgy of Copper and its Alloys training course provides candidates with comprehensive knowledge, skills & understanding on the structure, properties, extraction, manufacture, applications, inspection & testing of copper & its alloys.
The course is suitable for candidates at all levels, including those new to the Metallurgy of Copper & its Alloys, as no specific qualification entry requirements are needed.
This is a professional copper metallurgy qualification which develops competence in alloy families, strengthening mechanisms, corrosion behaviour, inspection, testing and mechanical‑property control. Employers value it because it builds the practical metallurgical competence people need in manufacturing, quality, inspection and engineering roles.
Our courses set the standard for technical training in the metals, welding & materials engineering industries. Since 2013 we have trained more than 700 candidates on Metallurgy, Welding, Materials Engineering & Quality Management courses.
Flexible Self Study Learning
The course is completed by self study, which means candidates can start and progress through the training at anytime, anywhere & at their own pace. No need to wait for course dates for classroom-based or online training courses and no need to pay travelling expenses & to spend time away paying for hotels & other living expenses.
Full-Colour Training Handbook
Candidates also receive a comprehensive, full-colour Training Handbook that serves as both a course guide and a valuable reference tool after completion of the course.
No Prior Knowledge Required
The course is suitable for candidates at all levels, including those new to Metallurgy, as no specific qualification entry requirements are required.
Tutor Support
Candidates also have the support of a Course Tutor as they progress through the course.
The course is divided into 4 MODULES as follows:
Module 1 — Physical Metallurgy & Crystalline Structure of Metals
This module introduces the foundations of metallurgy, including the definitions of metals and alloys, atomic structure, and crystal systems. It explains how malleability, work hardening, hot working, cold working, and annealing influence mechanical properties. The development of crystallographic texture, the effect of alloying, and the interpretation of phases and phase diagrams are covered in detail.
Metallography and electron microscopy are introduced as essential tools for microstructural examination.
Module 2 — Extraction, Metallurgy, Properties & Applications of Copper & Its Alloys
This module covers the full lifecycle of copper production, beginning with the importance of product standards and the key characteristics of copper and its alloys. The extraction and refining sequence—reverbatory furnace, copper converter, anode furnace, electrolytic refining—is explained, along with the production of Oxygen‑Free Copper (OFC/OFHC) and phosphorus‑deoxidised copper.
Electrical performance is highlighted through the IACS conductivity ranking.
The module also introduces brazing as a joining method for copper.
A comprehensive review of copper alloy families follows:
Brasses (Cu‑Zn)
Bronzes (Cu‑Sn)
Phosphor bronzes (Cu‑Sn‑P)
Silicon bronzes (Cu‑Si)
Aluminium bronzes (Cu‑Al)
Beryllium copper
Copper‑nickel alloys, including Cu‑Ni‑Si, Cu‑Ni‑Al, and Cu‑Ni‑Sn spinodal alloys
Modern manufacturing routes such as powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing are also included.
Module 3 — Mechanical Properties & Their Measurement
This module explains how the mechanical behaviour of copper and its alloys is quantified. It covers:
Tensile testing (strength, ductility, modulus)
Hardness testing (Brinell, Vickers, Rockwell)
Creep and stress‑rupture testing for high‑temperature applications
Module 4 — Inspection: Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) Techniques
The final module introduces the main NDT methods used for copper products and components:
Radiographic Testing (RT)
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
Eddy Current Testing (ET)
These techniques support quality assurance, defect detection and integrity assessment in both wrought and cast copper alloys.
Candidates are assessed on the course by continuous assessments which are e-mailed to the candidate. Completed Assessments are then e-mailed to the Course Tutor for marking. Candidates who achieve the required standard on the Assessments will be awarded a 'PROFESSIONAL CERTIFICATE IN THE METALLURGY OF COPPER & ITS ALLOYS' & CPD 25 HOURS.
