This Metallurgy of Aluminium Casting Alloys training course provides candidates with comprehensive knowledge, skills & understanding on the structure, properties, extraction, manufacture, applications, inspection & testing of cast aluminium alloys.
The course is suitable for candidates at all levels, including those new to the Metallurgy of Cast Aluminium & its Alloys, as no specific qualification entry requirements are required.
The course has been developed by academic & industry experts which ensures that the content is both academically rigorous and practically relevant.
You don’t need a university degree to build a successful career in Metallurgy. You need practical, industry-led training — and that’s exactly what we deliver.
Candidates also receive a comprehensive, full-colour Training Handbook that serves as both a course guide and a valuable reference tool after completion of the course.
The course is structured as follows:
Module 1 — Physical Metallurgy & Crystalline Structure of Metals & Alloys
This module introduces the foundational principles of metallurgy, beginning with the definitions of metals, alloys, and the role of metallurgy in understanding material behaviour. It explains atomic structure, crystal structures, and how alloying influences mechanical and physical properties.
Key metallurgical tools—phases, phase diagrams, metallography and electron microscopy—are introduced to support microstructural interpretation and quality control.
Module 2 — Metallurgy, Properties & Applications of Aluminium Casting Alloys
This module covers the full lifecycle of aluminium casting alloys, beginning with the extraction of aluminium and the fundamental characteristics that make aluminium a widely used engineering material.
It explains the distinction between heat‑treatable and non‑heat‑treatable casting alloys, including how alloying and heat treatment influence strength, ductility and corrosion resistance.
Applications of major cast aluminium alloy families are outlined, with emphasis on automotive, aerospace, structural and general engineering uses.
Module 3 — Mechanical Properties & Their Measurement
This module explains how the mechanical behaviour of aluminium casting alloys is evaluated. It covers:
Tensile testing (strength, ductility, modulus)
Hardness testing (Brinell, Vickers, Rockwell)
Fatigue testing, essential for cyclic‑loading applications such as wheels, suspension components and aerospace castings
These tests support alloy selection, process optimisation and compliance with engineering standards.
Module 4 — Inspection: Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) Techniques
The final module introduces the principal NDT methods used to detect internal and surface defects in aluminium castings:
Radiographic Testing (RT) — porosity, shrinkage, inclusions
Ultrasonic Testing (UT) — internal discontinuities
Dye Penetrant Testing (PT) — surface‑breaking cracks
Eddy Current Testing (ET) — surface and near‑surface defects
These techniques ensure structural integrity, safety and quality assurance in aluminium casting production.
