This Metallurgy of Cast Iron training course provides candidates with comprehensive knowledge, skills & understanding on the structure, properties, manufacture, applications, inspection & testing of cast iron.
The course is suitable for candidates at all levels, including those new to the Metallurgy of Cast Iron, as no specific qualification entry requirements are required.
The course has been developed by academic & industry experts which ensures that the content is both academically rigorous and practically relevant.
You don’t need a university degree to build a successful career in Metallurgy. You need practical, industry-led training — and that’s exactly what we deliver.
Candidates also receive a comprehensive, full-colour Training Handbook that serves as both a course guide and a valuable reference tool after completion of the course.
The course is divided into 4 MODULES as follows:
Module 1 — Physical Metallurgy & Crystalline Structure of Metals & Alloys
This module establishes the foundational principles of metallurgy, beginning with definitions of metals, alloys, and the role of product standards. It explains atomic structure, crystal systems, and how alloying influences mechanical and physical behaviour.
Key metallurgical tools—phase diagrams, the martensite transformation, metallography, and electron microscopy—are introduced to support microstructural interpretation and quality assessment.
Module 2 — History, Metallurgical Characteristics, Casting Processes & Types of Cast Iron
This module provides a comprehensive overview of cast iron’s development, characteristics, and manufacturing routes. It covers historical applications such as cast iron bridges, and essential metallurgical concepts including inoculation, equivalent carbon, thermal analysis, eutectic transformation and the effects of superheat on solidification.
Casting processes include blast furnace ironmaking, sand casting, centrifugal casting and the fundamentals of solidification behaviour.
A detailed review of cast iron types follows:
Grey Iron
Standard grey iron
Austenitic grey iron
Ductile Iron (Nodular Iron)
Standard ductile iron
SiMo iron
Heat‑treated ductile irons: annealed, normalised, quenched & tempered, austempered (ADI), austenitic ductile iron
Compacted Graphite Iron (CGI)
White Cast Iron
Standard white iron
Alloyed white cast iron
Malleable Cast Iron:
Blackheart
Whiteheart
Module 3 — Mechanical Testing & Mechanical Properties
This module explains how the mechanical behaviour of cast irons is measured and certified. It covers:
Tensile testing
Charpy V‑notch impact testing
Proof testing
Hardness testing
Certification requirements to BS EN 10204
These tests support material selection, quality control and compliance with engineering standards.
Module 4 — Inspection: Non‑Destructive Testing (NDT) Techniques
The final module introduces the principal NDT methods used to assess cast iron components for internal and surface defects:
Radiographic Testing (RT)
Ultrasonic Testing (UT)
Magnetic Particle Inspection (MPI/MT)
Dye Penetrant Testing (PT)
Eddy Current Testing (ET)
These techniques ensure structural integrity, safety and compliance in cast iron manufacturing and service applications.
